Marktplatz is a market square in downtown Bensheim surrounded by historic half-timbered houses arranged around a central fountain. The fountain has a column topped with a statue of Saint George that serves as the focal point of the space.

A fountain at this location was first recorded in the 14th century and has stood here for more than 600 years. The fountain was redesigned in 1895 and received its statue of Saint George, which remains on the column today.

The square serves as the heart of the town where locals gather for daily conversations and community events throughout the year. The half-timbered facades surrounding it create a welcoming backdrop that shapes how people experience their town center.

The square is easy to reach on foot and sits directly in Bensheim's downtown area. Multiple paths and walkways lead from here into the old town and surrounding neighborhoods.

A Roman mountain road called Strata Montana once ran north to south directly beneath this square, connecting distant regions of the empire. Though the ancient path is no longer visible, it helped establish this location as a natural gathering place for trade.
