Obermarkt, Historic market square in Görlitz, Germany
Obermarkt is a rectangular square extending roughly 250 meters through the old town center and bordered by buildings from different eras. Renaissance facades, Baroque structures, and 19th century townhouses frame the space and create its distinctive appearance.
The square took shape around 1250 as a grain trading center and served as the city's economic heart for centuries. Over time, grand buildings rose around its edges, standing today as evidence of the square's former importance.
The Dreifaltigkeitskirche at the southeast corner shapes how people experience the square through its prominent position and architectural presence. The church and square together form the heart of the old town where residents and visitors naturally gather.
The square occupies a central location in the old town, connecting the historic core with newer districts and making it easy to reach. Regular markets and city celebrations take place here, which are good times to visit and explore the surrounding buildings and streets.
The Napoleon House is considered the most elegant Baroque building on the square and takes its name from a stay by the French emperor during his military campaigns. This building remains a striking landmark that draws visitors' attention today.
