Givskud Zoo, Safari park and zoo in Vejle Municipality, Denmark
Givskud Zoo is a safari park and zoo spanning about 120 hectares with distinct areas for over 700 animals from roughly 70 species. The animals live in spacious, nature-like enclosures that allow you to observe them as they would be in the wild.
The facility opened in 1969 as Løveparken, starting with only lions as its focus. The following year brought Asian elephants to the park, and the grounds gradually expanded into a larger complex.
The name references the wild animals displayed here, and visitors encounter these creatures in open spaces that allow them to behave naturally. The facility shows how different species coexist and how people can learn to understand and protect animal life.
You can explore the park in your own vehicle or take guided bus tours to move around. Plan for enough time to visit all sections, as the grounds are spread across a large area.
The park houses one of Europe's largest penguin facilities, where you can watch Humboldt penguins both above and below water through special viewing areas. This setup lets you see how these birds navigate both worlds.
