Vilsund Bridge, Road and bascule bridge in Morsø Municipality, Denmark
Vilsund Bridge is a road and bascule bridge spanning 380 meters across the water with a width of 10.4 meters. The longest structural span reaches about 30 meters, creating a passageway that accommodates both vehicles and pedestrians.
Engineer Anker Engelund designed the project in 1937, and construction was completed in 1939. The opening on July 16, 1939 marked a new connection between the regions of Mors and Thy.
The bridge links two regions and enables daily movement between local communities. It has become part of how people here travel and connect with neighbors on either side.
The bridge is open to cars and pedestrians and serves as a main traffic route in northwestern Jutland. Visitors should note that traffic varies depending on the time of day, and the bridge can become windy in poor weather.
The structure features a mechanical lifting system that raises to allow sailboats and other vessels passage through the waterway. This working system from 1939 demonstrates how engineers of that era combined traffic and maritime needs in a single design.
