Toftum School

The building measures 6 by 6 meters and stands as a testament to early Danish educational architecture with its simple rectangular design and traditional construction methods.

Built in 1784 by local inhabitants before mandatory education laws, this structure represents the earliest stage of formalized education in the Danish countryside.

The school educated children of sailors and farmers, reflecting the maritime heritage of Rømø where many residents worked in whaling and naval operations.

Visitors can explore this heritage site from May through September between 10:00 and 18:00, with closure on Mondays and limited to exterior viewing.

This structure holds the distinction of being both the oldest and smallest preserved school building throughout Denmark's educational history.
