Leuchtturm List West, Lighthouse in List auf Sylt, Germany

Leuchtturm List West is an 11-metre cylindrical cast-iron tower on the Ellenbogen peninsula near List auf Sylt, painted white with a red lantern. Its occulting light, at a focal height of 19 metres, shows white, red or green depending on direction, with a 4.5-second flash in each 6-second period.

This structure was built by the Danish Kingdom in 1857 and began operations in 1858. It was Germany's first cast iron lighthouse of its kind and shaped the history of North Sea navigation.

The tower is a listed monument in Schleswig-Holstein and is still run by the Wasserstraßen- und Schifffahrtsverwaltung from Tönning. Its light works together with the twin tower List Ost to guide ships through the Lister Tief between Sylt and the Danish island of Rømø. The lantern is painted red, the cast-iron shaft white.

This lighthouse is visible from the outside and sits in an open location near the coast that is easy to reach. Visitors should expect changeable coastal weather and wear appropriate clothing.

The tower is only 11 metres tall, yet its focal height of 19 metres and range of 14 nautical miles for the white light make it a key mark for ships passing between Sylt and the Danish island of Rømø. Its light shows white, red or green depending on direction, with 4.5 seconds of light and 1.5 seconds of darkness every six seconds.
