Braderuper Heide / Sylt, Protected heathland area in Wenningstedt-Braderup, Germany
Braderuper Heide is a protected nature reserve on Sylt that stretches between the villages of Braderup and Kampen. The area features wooden walkways and staircases that guide visitors through natural vegetation toward the Wadden Sea.
The reserve received protection in 1979 to save the last remaining heathland in Schleswig-Holstein. This action became necessary as historical heather landscapes had nearly disappeared due to agriculture and settlement expansion.
The heathland is a place where visitors can experience Sylt's natural landscape in its original form. People come here to understand how important these spaces are for the island and its communities.
The reserve is easily reached by public transport, with parking areas near the main entrance. Sturdy footwear is recommended as the paths cross uneven terrain and weather conditions can change quickly.
The reserve contains three heather species that bloom at the same time, turning the landscape purple and creating a rare natural display. This flowering coincidence is characteristic of Sylt and shows how valuable this small protected area is for the island's plant diversity.
