Kampener Vogelkoje auf Sylt, Nature reserve in Kampen, Germany
The Kampener Vogelkoje is a nature reserve on Sylt with roughly 10 hectares of protected land, featuring a freshwater lake and traditional duck enclosures. The site is bordered by dykes and displays the landscape features typical of this North Sea island.
The site was built in 1767 as a duck-catching facility and served this purpose for over 150 years. After operations ended, it transformed into a protected nature area and has maintained this role to the present day.
The Söl'ring Foriining organization maintains this historical site, preserving both the natural environment and the traditional duck-catching heritage of Sylt.
A loop trail winds through the site with several information points to explore along the way. Most areas are easy to access, and visitors should wear walking shoes and bring weather-appropriate clothing.
The site preserves historical duck decoys that were reconstructed using traditional methods, showing how hunters once lured their catch. These structures are rare and offer a glimpse into a forgotten hunting tradition of the island.
