Tvedes Bryggeri
Tvedes Bryggeri is a registered monument brewery in Copenhagen founded in 1852 and located at Vesterbrogade 140-142. The building features solid brick walls and traditional windows typical of 1800s industrial architecture, now converted to residential use while retaining its original structure and character.
The brewery was founded in 1852 by Hans Jørgen Tvede and quickly became one of Scandinavia's largest producers of small beer by the 1880s. Production ceased at the original location in 1899 after the business merged with other Copenhagen breweries to form De Forenede Bryggerier.
The site on Vesterbrogade reflects Copenhagen's working-class history and the role of local breweries in community life. It stands as a reminder of a time when craft production and neighborhood gathering places shaped daily life in the city.
The site is located in a popular residential area with good metro and train connections, making it easy to reach. The surrounding neighborhood features lively streets, parks, and other historic sites worth exploring on foot.
Hans Jørgen Tvede operated a social space called Vesterbro Samaritan in the brewery's cellar, where people in need could receive free meals. Later, he and his wife founded a care home for those in need nearby, showing the business extended beyond brewing.
