Skjoldenæsholm Castle, Neoclassical castle and hotel in Ringsted Municipality, Denmark.
Skjoldenæsholm Castle is a neoclassical manor house in Ringsted Municipality, Denmark, operating as a hotel and conference center. The main building is made of yellow-washed brick and sits within a wooded estate crossed by a series of small lakes.
The estate was first recorded in the 1340s as a royal property and passed through the hands of several noble families over the following centuries. Its current neoclassical form took shape through rebuilding work carried out mainly in the 18th and 19th centuries.
The castle served as the filming location for Thomas Vinterberg's 1998 film "The Celebration", one of the first Dogme 95 productions. Walking through the rooms today, the connection to that film is easy to feel.
The castle operates as a hotel and event venue throughout the year, so a reservation is recommended before visiting. The paths around the lakes and through the woods are open to walk freely, and other attractions on the grounds are also worth checking in advance.
The estate is home to a tram museum founded in 1978 that holds historic vehicles from several countries. Alongside the golf course on the same grounds, this makes for an unusually varied day out.
