Land of Legends, Open-air museum in Lejre Municipality, Denmark.
Land of Legends spreads across approximately 43 hectares with reconstructed settlements representing different periods of Danish history. The site shows how people lived during the Stone Age, Bronze Age, and Iron Age.
It began in 1964 as Lejre Experimental Center, serving as a research facility to study ancient living conditions. Over time, the center evolved into a museum where archaeology comes alive through hands-on reconstruction.
Staff members demonstrate daily life from the past through activities like grinding grain, baking bread, and paddling dugout canoes. Visitors can participate directly and try these traditional skills themselves.
The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday with seasonal activities throughout the year. Visitors should wear comfortable clothing since the expansive grounds require walking across various paths and open areas.
Researchers conduct experimental archaeology here by reconstructing historical settlements and living in them temporarily. This approach reveals the practical challenges and surprises that ancient people encountered in their everyday lives.
