Viborg Katedralskole, Historic gymnasium in Viborg, Denmark.
Viborg Katedralskole is a gymnasium in Viborg, Denmark, located close to the cathedral and combining a neoclassical main building with modern Scandinavian interior elements. The complex includes several wings, among them the Kampmann Hall, which is used for school events and gatherings.
The school was founded in 1060 as a Catholic seminary, making it one of the oldest educational institutions in Denmark. After the Protestant Reformation of 1536, it was converted into a secular gymnasium and has remained in operation ever since.
The school has a Latin Garden that students still use today, a rare reminder of the time when Latin was the language of instruction. This garden sits within the school grounds and shows how an old learning tradition can remain visible in everyday school life.
The school is in the center of Viborg, within walking distance of the cathedral and other city landmarks. Since it is an active school, access to certain areas may be limited during school hours, so a visit outside of regular class times works best.
Writer Johannes V. Jensen, who received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1944, graduated from this school in 1893. His name is closely linked to the school and he remains its most recognized former student.
