Esrum Kloster & Møllegård

Esrum Kloster & Møllegård is a medieval monastery and mill complex with museum exhibits located among meadows and forest paths. The site features gardens with about 150 medicinal plants, outdoor play areas, and exhibition spaces throughout the grounds.

The monastery was founded in the 12th century as the center of the Cistercian order in Denmark and maintained close ties with Danish royalty. This importance shaped its development for centuries.

The place shows how monks lived and worked together here, with exhibitions presenting their daily routines through sound and light effects. Visitors experience reconstructions of historical buildings that convey what life in the monastery felt like.

Visitors can purchase tickets to explore the monastery, mill, and exhibitions, as well as the outdoor play areas. The on-site Møllecafé serves meals prepared with herbs grown in the gardens.

The monastery has a long brewing tradition that continues today in the production of local beer, aquavit, and other products made from historical recipes. Visitors can find these handcrafted items in the monastery shop.
