Aarhus Central Workshops, Railway maintenance facility in Central Aarhus, Denmark
Aarhus Central Workshops is a railway assembly and repair complex in central Aarhus comprising multiple buildings from different periods. The site includes a main building, a smithy, and several production halls that reflect the industrial construction methods of their era.
Founded in 1862 by English company Peto, Brassey and Betts, the workshops became the primary repair facility for locomotives and trams across Jutland and Funen. Operations ceased in 1990, after which the buildings were repurposed and renovated.
The workshops demonstrate how rail technology shaped everyday life and drew workers from across the region. The buildings reflect a time when such facilities were the heart of local economic activity.
The complex is within walking distance of the train station and easily accessible from the city center. The renovated spaces now host exhibitions and events, making parts of the grounds open to visitors.
At its peak, the facility employed around 1,850 workers and handled maintenance for most of the country's locomotives and trams. This large-scale operation significantly shaped the social structure and growth of Aarhus.
