Dormition Cathedral, Eastern Orthodox cathedral in Kesklinn, Estonia
The Dormition Cathedral is a brick structure in Tartu featuring a cross-shaped layout and a prominent domed roof with Russian Baroque design elements. The building rises with its octagonal base and large vaulted roof structure, clearly visible across the cityscape.
Construction took place between 1776 and 1782, following a fire that destroyed the previous stone church in 1775. Architect Paul Spekle designed the new structure on a site that had held religious buildings since the 13th century.
The cathedral serves as a spiritual center for the local Orthodox community and displays traditional religious artworks inside. Visitors can see icon panels that reflect the practices of Eastern Orthodox faith.
The cathedral is located in the city center and easily accessible on foot from central Tartu. Visitors should be aware that this is an active place of worship, and access may be limited during religious services.
The cathedral was not originally planned as a permanent structure, but emerged as a response to the emergency following the major fire. This event allowed for a complete redesign of the religious space with modern Baroque principles that differed from earlier styles.
