Emajõe-Suursoo Nature Park, Protected wetland area in Tartu County, Estonia.
Emajõe-Suursoo Nature Park covers Estonia's largest bog delta and contains eight lakes, more than a hundred bog islands, and several rivers and streams. The area forms a complex network of waterways and vegetation that creates a mosaic of water, peat terrain, and isolated patches of higher ground.
The bog islands were home to numerous settlements throughout the past century, where people lived among the wetland landscape. Over time most inhabitants gradually left these isolated islands, leaving only a handful of occupied homesteads as traces of earlier habitation.
The wetland attracts local harvesters in autumn who gather cranberries by boat, following traditions passed down through generations. The work connects people to the natural rhythms and knowledge of the bogland that sustains these seasonal practices.
The area requires careful planning to visit, as regular trails and roads are absent and navigation can be difficult for those unfamiliar with the terrain. Guided tours run from June through August and provide the best way to explore the wetland safely.
Spring floods raise water levels by about a meter, submerging large areas of the wetland landscape and creating temporary waterways throughout the bog. These seasonal inundations reshape the ecosystem and offer a dramatically different experience of the park between seasons.
