Kallaste outcrop

Kallaste outcrop is a sandstone formation stretching along Lake Peipus that displays multiple geological layers in its exposed face. The rock wall features several small caves and overhangs carved by natural erosion processes.

This sandstone formation developed roughly 400 million years ago when the region lay beneath shallow sea water. The rock originated during a period when the area hosted a marine ecosystem with coral structures.

Estonian folklore mentions a mythical smith who worked inside the caves of Kallaste outcrop, crafting weapons for local inhabitants during ancient times.

The site is easily accessed on foot and offers a straightforward walk with views of the various rock faces. Visitors should be prepared for uneven ground and wear sturdy footwear.

Wave erosion from Lake Peipus continuously shapes the sandstone, creating natural caves that measure up to 1.5 meters in height throughout the formation.
