Arrecife

Arrecife is the administrative capital of Lanzarote island in the Canary Islands and sits along the eastern coastline. Natural coral reefs protect and frame its main beach areas, shaping how the waterfront is organized.

The town started as a fishing village in the 15th century and became the official island capital in 1852. This shift turned it from a small settlement into an administrative and commercial center.

The name comes from the coral reefs that have shaped the city's character and appearance over time. White-painted buildings around the lagoon reflect traditional Canarian architecture, while fishing remains a visible part of daily life.

The port is the main ferry hub connecting to other Canary Islands and mainland Spain. The city center is compact and walkable, particularly around the lagoon and waterfront areas.

The 18th-century Castillo de San José sits on a rocky outcrop above the harbor and now houses a contemporary art museum. Visitors can explore art collections while taking in views of the port below.
