Abbey of Santa María de Alaón
Abbey of Santa María de Alaón, Romanesque monastery in Sopeira, Spain.
The basilica features three aisles with semicylindrical apses, complemented by a square bell tower rising through four distinct levels.
The monastery, founded in the late 11th century, stands upon a 6th-century Visigothic temple discovered during archaeological studies beneath the main sanctuary.
The cartulary of Alaón contains medieval documents, genealogies, and chronologies spanning from 806 to 1245, preserving regional historical records.
The abbey currently functions as the parish church of Sopeira, situated at an elevation of 733 meters in the Pyrenean county of Ribagorza.
Two ancient staircases lead to a crypt containing inscriptions dedicated to Saints Peter, Paul, Nereus, and Achilleus in Visigothic characters.
