Abbey of Santa María de Alaón

Abbey of Santa María de Alaón is a Romanesque monastery in Sopeira featuring three aisles that open into semicircular apses. A square bell tower rises above the structure in four clearly defined levels.

The monastery was built in the late 11th century directly over the remains of a 6th-century Visigothic temple, which archaeologists discovered beneath the sanctuary. This demonstrates how sacred sites often remained significant through different periods and cultures.

This monastery served as a spiritual center for the local community for centuries, shaping both religious practice and daily routines in the surrounding area. The care taken in its construction reflects the importance people placed on this sacred space.

Two ancient staircases inside lead down to a crypt containing inscriptions carved in Visigothic script. This underground chamber honors Saints Peter, Paul, Nereus, and Achilleus, revealing a hidden layer of the site's past.
