Monastery of Sant Jeroni de Cotalba, Gothic monastery in Alfauir, Spain

The Monastery of Sant Jeroni de Cotalba is a building complex featuring a Gothic tower, Mudéjar cloister, Baroque chapel, and multiple courtyards. Stone corridors and archways connect the sections, showing how different architectural styles blend throughout the structure.

The monastery was founded in 1388 by Alfonso of Aragon and became the first Hieronymite establishment in Crown of Aragon territory. This founding marked the beginning of a major religious community in the region.

The monastery displays artworks created by friar Nicolás Borrás and holds Gothic polychrome sculptures throughout its upper areas. These pieces show how artists contributed their skills to the community over the centuries.

The site is open to visitors through guided tours that last about 90 minutes and cover the main areas. Check opening days in advance since access is limited to specific times of the week.

The monastery served as a burial ground for the March family, including the two wives of medieval poet Ausiàs March. This connection to a notable literary family adds a layer of historical significance beyond its religious role.
