Monterreal Castle, Medieval fortress in Baiona, Spain
Monterreal Castle spreads across the Monte Boi peninsula with defensive walls and strategic towers positioned to overlook the Atlantic Ocean and the Vigo estuary. The fortress covers a large area that visitors can explore on foot, with access to towers, battlements, and interior buildings now used as a national parador hotel.
The fortress developed gradually from medieval times and was expanded over several centuries. During the 15th century, King Juan II of Castile granted trading rights to Baiona, making it one of only two Galician ports authorized for foreign commerce.
The fortress displays building styles from both medieval and Renaissance times, with different sections constructed between the 12th and 16th centuries. Visitors can observe how architectural elements from these eras blend together across the walls and towers.
The best way to experience the fortress is by walking along the walls, which offer views across the entire site. Plan enough time to explore the different towers and areas, especially if you want to visit the parador hotel or enjoy meals at its restaurant.
A watchtower here spotted the caravel La Pinta returning from Columbus' first voyage in 1493. This made Baiona the first European location to receive news of the discovery of the New World.
