Monterreal Castle, Medieval fortress in Baiona, Spain
The fortress extends across Monte Boi peninsula with three kilometers of defensive walls and strategic towers overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and Vigo estuary.
During the 15th century, the castle gained commercial importance when Juan II of Castile granted trading privileges, making Baiona one of two Galician ports authorized for foreign trade.
The fortress structure displays architectural elements from both medieval and Renaissance periods, with distinct sections built between the 12th and 16th centuries.
Visitors can walk the complete perimeter of the fortress walls while accessing the towers, battlements, and interior buildings converted into a national parador hotel.
The castle watchtower first spotted La Pinta caravel returning from America in 1493, making Baiona the first European port to learn about the New World discovery.
