Urdaibai, Biosphere Reserve in Biscay, Spain
The Urdaibai Reserve extends across 220 square kilometers, featuring a network of streams flowing into salt marshes bordered by steep cliffs and oak forests.
The territory contains archaeological sites from multiple periods, including the Santimamiñe cave with artifacts dating from Middle Paleolithic to Iron Age periods.
The region maintains traditional Basque fishing practices in Bermeo port while sustaining agricultural activities throughout the protected wetlands and surrounding areas.
Visitors access the reserve through designated entry points near Guernica and Bermeo, with observation platforms providing views of migratory birds across the estuary.
The reserve functions as the most substantial wetland system in northern Spain, supporting 318 vertebrate species and 615 types of vascular plants.
