Atxarre

Atxarre is a beach in Biscay situated between two mountains of the same names, with natural cliffs forming the shoreline boundaries. The sandy expanse is sheltered by these rock formations, creating distinct conditions along the coast.

This area became part of the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve and received UNESCO World Heritage designation in 1994 for its ecological importance. The designation reflects decades of effort to protect the diverse coastal ecosystems found here.

This beach reflects traditional Basque coastal living, where local fishermen continue their craft alongside modern water sports enthusiasts. The place remains woven into the everyday rhythm of the surrounding communities.

The beach has restroom facilities, parking, and restaurants nearby, with lifeguard services during summer months. Conditions vary significantly depending on tides and seasons, so it is worth checking before your visit.

Extensive sandbars emerge during low tide, dramatically changing the shoreline and opening new areas to explore. This shifting landscape means the beach presents a different face depending on when you visit.
