Laga, Sandy beach in Ibarrangelu, Spain.
Laga is a sandy beach in the Basque village of Ibarrangelu, on Spain's northern coast, framed on both sides by steep cliffs. Behind the beach rises the rocky Ogono headland, while the Cantabrian Sea opens up in front.
The coastline around Ibarrangelu has long been shaped by fishing, and Laga served for centuries as a working shore tied to the sea. Over time, the beach drew more visitors and shifted from a working waterfront into a known destination along the Basque coast.
The beach sits within the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, where visitors can experience local Basque coastal traditions through food and the way the community uses the shoreline daily.
Laga sits within the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, so some areas around the beach are protected and access may be limited in certain spots. Lifeguards are present during summer, and showers, toilets, and parking are available on site.
Laga draws surfers throughout the year, not just in summer, because the offshore winds and the shape of the bay work together to produce consistent waves. This makes it one of the few spots along the Basque coast where surfing is possible in almost any season.
