Castle of Valderrobles

Castle of Valderrobres is a medieval fortress built on a rocky outcrop with Gothic architectural features throughout. The interior contains a central courtyard surrounded by rooms and passages with pointed arches and stone vaults.

It was originally built as a defensive fortress but was transformed by the archbishops of Zaragoza into a bishop's palace during the 14th and 15th centuries. This transformation shifted the building's purpose from military stronghold to residential seat.

The rooms inside display medieval craftsmanship through stone carvings and vaulted ceilings that show how people lived and worked in those times. Walking through these spaces, visitors notice the care taken in decorating doorways and walls with architectural details.

Visitors can tour the castle with guides, audio guides, or explore on their own, with tickets available at the nearby museum. Comfortable shoes are recommended since the interior involves uneven floors and multiple staircases.

The building was cleverly adapted to the irregular shape of the rock it sits on, making the floor plan feel unusual. On the second floor, visitors can actually see where the natural rock protrudes into the interior space.
