Passeig del Born, Avenue in Palma, Spain
Passeig del Born is a pedestrian avenue in central Palma, running between Plaça del Rei Joan Carles I and Plaça de la Reina. It is lined with tall plane trees and bordered by grand old buildings that now hold shops, cafés, and an art gallery.
During the 1500s this open ground hosted jousting tournaments and military parades. In the 1800s it was redesigned as a wide promenade, following the style of Parisian boulevards.
Casal Solleric, a baroque palace near the middle of the promenade, now serves as an exhibition space. On certain festival days, the open street itself becomes a stage for music and art events.
The whole avenue is closed to cars, so walking is easy and safe for families. Early morning feels quieter, while late afternoon brings more people and a livelier rhythm.
Bronze lion statues stand at the entrance to the avenue, a detail that many walkers pass without noticing. An obelisk in the middle refers to a local uprising from the 1500s, giving the shopping street a quiet layer of memory.
