The current building replaced a 14th-century Gothic structure initiated by Infanta Blanca of Portugal, with construction phases spanning from the 15th to 18th centuries.
The church contains baroque altarpieces, including the main altar dedicated to Our Lady of Assumption and multiple chapels with Renaissance and Hispanic-American imagery.

A circular oculus in the facade houses a Gothic stone image of the Virgin and Child, transferred from a nearby hermitage.
