Castell cartoixa de Vallparadís
Castell cartoixa de Vallparadís, Gothic castle and museum in Terrassa, Spain
The Castell Cartoixa de Vallparadís is a Gothic castle featuring a rectangular central tower with four square towers at each corner and surrounded by a deep moat. The complex includes a cloister with irregular openings on the lower level and pointed arches above, which houses the chapter room.
The castle was built in 1110 as a noble residence for Berenguer de Sanlà and functioned as an aristocratic dwelling for several centuries. In 1344, Blanca de Centelles gave the property to Carthusian monks, who transformed it into a monastery.
The building now houses exhibitions featuring local archaeological finds and artworks that reflect the region's heritage and identity. It serves as a key place to understand how communities developed over time in this area.
The castle is accessible through Vallparadís Park and Salmerón Street, with the Textile Museum and Documentation Center located just meters away. Both facilities can be easily visited together as part of a single stop in the area.
The cloister building was originally the castle's inner courtyard and displays a blend of architectural features from different periods. The lower floor openings follow a different pattern than the upper pointed-arch arcades, revealing multiple phases of reconstruction.
