Museum Jorge Rando, Contemporary art museum in Málaga, Spain.
Museum Jorge Rando is an art institution in Málaga dedicated to expressionist and neo-expressionist works housed within a renovated 19th-century monastery. The building features four exhibition rooms with natural lighting, a library, workshop spaces, and an interior courtyard containing a century-old mandarin tree.
The institution opened in May 2014 following a three-year renovation project that began in 2011 and transformed the historic monastery into Spain's first expressionist art museum. This conversion marked a significant shift in how the centuries-old building would serve the city's artistic community.
The museum serves as Spain's first institution dedicated entirely to expressionist movements and regularly hosts workshops and discussions that encourage contemporary artistic dialogue. Visitors can engage with the art and participate in community activities centered on this powerful artistic approach.
The museum is open Monday through Saturday with free admission for all visitors. Note that the historic building has accessibility limitations, and visitors should be aware that large bags and flash photography are not permitted inside.
The museum allows visitors to speak directly with art historians without prior appointment and share their perspectives on the works displayed. Modern materials such as reinforced concrete and weathering steel have been integrated into the original monastery structure, creating an unexpected contrast.
