Salinas de Marchamalo y playa de Las Amoladeras, Protected natural area in La Manga del Mar Menor, Spain.

Salinas de Marchamalo and Playa de Las Amoladeras form a protected area along the southern edge of the Mar Menor lagoon, combining salt ponds, beaches, and wetlands. The site contains remnants of historic salt production facilities, natural shoreline, and shallow waters that create distinct habitats.

The region became a center for salt production from the late 19th century onward, an industry that shaped the landscape for generations. Archaeological evidence suggests this coastal strip was already inhabited by fishing and shellfish-gathering communities in ancient times.

The name reflects the area's salt-making heritage and the distinctive landscape shaped by salt ponds that still mark the terrain. Visitors experience the quiet of this largely unchanged coastal environment, where industrial history meets natural preservation.

The beach is easily accessible and offers natural shade from vegetation at several points along the bay. Visitors should bring water, as the surroundings are dry and open with limited sun protection in many areas.

The site is home to rare fish such as the Spanish toothcarp, found in only a few coastal lakes of the region. These tiny fish have adapted perfectly to the unique conditions of the shallow, brackish waters.
