Edifici Xifré, building in Spain
The Edifici Xifré is a large building in Arenys de Mar built in the neoclassical style with simple, straight lines and symmetrical features such as columns and cornices. It has a U-shaped layout with a main rectangular section and smaller wings at the back, stone exterior walls with large windows on two levels, and interior vaulted brick ceilings that create spacious, light-filled rooms.
The building was constructed between 1844 and 1848 as a hospital for poor people and initially served as a place of medical care. Over the following decades, it adapted to many different purposes, including a school run by nuns, a youth shelter, a courthouse, and a workshop school, demonstrating its importance to the changing needs of the community.
The building is named after Josep Xifré, the wealthy founder who made his fortune in Cuba and chose to support his hometown through this project. Locals view it as a symbol of compassion, as it was built to care for poor and sick people.
The building is centrally located in town and easy to reach from several streets, with gardens and open spaces surrounding it that make it simple to explore and view from outside. Since it is a protected cultural site, visitors should check local guidelines and inquire about occasional guided tours that may be available.
Inside the building sits a mausoleum containing the remains of Josep Xifré, adorned with a sculpture by French artist Charles Gumery that honors the founder and his generosity. This artistic addition gives the structure a personal and commemorative dimension beyond its practical function.
