Alzina dels Colls
Alzina dels Colls is a large holm oak standing alone in an open field about 1 mile (1.5 km) southwest of Casserres. It reaches roughly 16 meters tall with a crown spreading nearly 95 feet (29 meters) wide and a trunk circumference exceeding 24 feet (7.5 meters) at its base.
This tree has been a landscape feature for generations, growing steadily over many decades. A forest fire in July 1994 damaged part of its crown, but it recovered and has continued growing normally since that time.
The name Alzina refers to the holm oak species in Catalan tradition. For local people, this solitary tree serves as a familiar landmark and represents a deep connection to the surrounding countryside and its agricultural heritage.
The tree is easily accessible by paved road from Casserres, about 1 mile (1.5 km) toward Cardona, where a sign marks the short dirt path to the tree in the open field. Visitors can walk close to observe its impressive form and enjoy the quiet countryside setting without any special permits needed.
A forest fire in 1994 burned sections of the tree's crown, leaving visible scars on its structure. Rather than decline, it responded by regrowing damaged portions and remains healthy today, demonstrating exceptional resilience to severe damage.
