Pazo de Tor, Manor house in Tor, Monforte de Lemos, Spain
Pazo de Tor is a two-story manor house with a U-shaped layout in the village of Tor, within the municipality of Monforte de Lemos in Galicia. The upper floor held the family's noble quarters, while the ground floor was reserved for service and farm use.
The Garza family built a first residence on this site in the 14th century, though the current structure dates from the late 18th century when it was rebuilt from scratch. Later generations gradually adapted and extended the building without changing its overall character.
The Pazo de Tor now works as an ethnological museum where furnished rooms display objects that a noble Galician family used in daily life. Walking through the kitchen, sitting rooms, and bedrooms gives a clear sense of how the house was lived in over the generations.
The manor sits in the small village of Tor and is easiest to reach by car from Monforte de Lemos. It is best to plan the visit in advance, as guided tours run by appointment and the museum is closed on Mondays.
The museum holds a set of rare musical instruments from the 18th and 19th centuries, including a claviorgan made by Longman and Broderip and a pianoforte by Collard and Collard. These pieces suggest that music was a serious part of life in the house, not just a passing pastime.
