Sant Joan de Fàbregues

Sant Joan de Fàbregues is a Romanesque church located in Rupit i Pruit at approximately 825 meters elevation. The building contains a single nave with three apses arranged in a clover shape, topped by an octagonal dome that features a lantern.

The church was first documented in 968 and served as the original parish church of Rupit. In 1955, the town underwent an ecclesiastical reorganization that shifted its role to another building.

The building shows Lombard Romanesque features that you notice as you walk around its exterior, from the curved friezes to the sawtooth patterns decorating the apses. These details reveal how medieval craftsmen brought their technical skills to this remote location.

The building is accessible via a paved road about three kilometers long that can be driven. Stone picnic tables are available near the grounds if you want to spend time at the site.

The grounds surrounding the church preserve an old cemetery with an entrance gate dating to 1777 that still stands today. From this vantage point, visitors look out across the Catalan countryside and experience a place deeply woven into local history.
