Castell de Sant Miquel, Medieval castle and semaphore tower in Gironès, Spain

Castell de Sant Miquel consists of medieval castle ruins with walls, a watchtower, and a Gothic chapel situated on a hilltop near Girona. The remains sit prominently on a wooded peak and form a recognizable structure within the landscape of the region.

The fortress originated during medieval times as a strategic defensive structure for the region. In 1848, the deteriorating chapel was repurposed with the addition of two optical telegraph towers to support communication between settlements.

The castle has long served as a symbol of regional authority and remains deeply connected to local pride in Catalonia. Residents and visitors alike recognize its outline from various points around Girona as part of their shared heritage.

Reaching the castle is best done by following a circular hiking trail of approximately nine kilometers starting from Girona. The path winds through wooded terrain and requires sturdy footwear and moderate fitness.

While climbing to the ruins, visitors can discover ancient stone steps carved directly into the rock, revealing how this location was carefully engineered for access. These details are easy to overlook but speak to the historical importance of the site.
