Outokumpu mine

The Outokumpu mine is a mining museum featuring authentic equipment and photographs from 20th-century mining operations. A 277-meter tunnel descends about 50 meters underground, where the exhibits are presented under realistic conditions.

The museum was founded in 1982 in a former miners' hostel and preserves the legacy of copper extraction that shaped the region's development. Mining in this area was a central force for economy and settlement over many decades.

The exhibits show how miners worked and what tools they used in their daily routines. The displayed minerals and old machinery tell the story of people who shaped this region through their labor.

You can reach the underground exhibits by elevator or stairs, depending on your preference and mobility. The tunnel environment is cool and well-lit, so bring a jacket and watch for slippery surfaces when walking.

The underground exhibition displays rocks that are more than a billion years old, revealing how the Earth formed in this region. These prehistoric rocks offer insight into a deep past that is otherwise hard to access.
