Chopo de Negrón, white poplar singular tree
The Chopo de Negrón is a large white poplar tree in Vallanca with a trunk measuring about 7 meters (23 feet) in circumference at its base. The tree features a visible hollow in its interior and splits into substantial branches higher up, with wooden supports helping to maintain its structure.
The tree is estimated to be around 250 years old, having begun growing in the late 1700s. It was documented by writer Rafael Janini in the early 1900s, when it was already a remarkable sight in the region.
The tree holds special meaning for locals as a symbol of strength and persistence through the centuries. Residents and visitors often pause here to reflect, drawn by the peaceful setting that connects them to their region's past.
The tree is best reached by walking from the nearby settlement of Negrón, with the route being straightforward and taking just a few minutes. A vehicle option exists but requires driving on an unpaved road.
The tree's major branches are supported by traditional wooden structures called cimales, an unusual reinforcement method that allows it to maintain its form despite centuries of age and natural wear. This hands-on approach to preservation demonstrates how the community values keeping the tree standing.
