Pasifae, Bronze sculpture at D'Adarro Beach, Vilanova i la Geltrú, Spain
Pasifae is a bronze sculpture standing on a reinforced concrete base at the Ribes Roges breakwater. The work rises approximately 3 meters high and extends about 5.5 meters across.
The sculpture was cast in a Madrid foundry in 1992 and weighed approximately 2.5 tons. It was installed at its final location on the breakwater in 1993 and has remained there since.
The sculpture references a figure from Greek mythology and shows the form of a Retinta breed cattle from the Guadalquivir region. The artist chose this particular animal form to present a classical story in a contemporary way.
The sculpture sits on the breakwater next to the maritime promenade and is easily accessible from there. Best viewed during daylight hours when you can see the details of the bronze form clearly.
In August 2019 a rare waterspout was photographed forming directly behind the bronze form, turning the sculpture into an unexpected subject for natural phenomena. This fleeting moment shows how the location changes in rare circumstances.
