Convent de Sant Francesc, 13th-century Gothic monastery in Palma, Spain
The Convent is a 13th-century Franciscan monastery in central Palma built over several phases, with a church featuring a tall central nave and side chapels opening into the space. The cloister courtyard is surrounded by four vaulted galleries supported by slender columns and pointed arches typical of Gothic design.
The monastery was founded in 1278 and construction started in 1281, expanding gradually over more than 300 years with different sections added in successive waves. The complex reached its current appearance by the 17th century as various phases of building shaped its final form.
The name reflects the Franciscan order that inhabited this place and shaped its spiritual life. The cloister courtyard shows how monks moved through daily routines, with columns and arches creating spaces for quiet reflection and communal living.
The site sits within walking distance in the city center and has clear access from the street entrance into the complex grounds. Interior spaces offer shade and cooler temperatures, especially in the cloister galleries, so bring a light layer if you plan to spend time indoors.
The philosopher Ramon Llull is buried inside the church, marked by a stone figure lying in repose, commemorating a medieval intellectual who left a lasting mark on regional thought. His tomb draws visitors interested in the island's philosophical heritage.
