Gibraltar City Hall, Municipal administrative building in John Mackintosh Square, Gibraltar
The Gibraltar City Hall stands at the west end of John Mackintosh Square with three stories and a symmetrical facade following Regency architecture principles.
Aaron Cardozo, a Portuguese merchant, constructed this building in 1819 as his private residence after receiving special permission due to his friendship with Lord Nelson.
The building houses the Mario Finlayson National Art Gallery, which displays artworks created by notable Gibraltarian artists throughout different periods.
The City Hall functions as the office of the Mayor of Gibraltar and since 2023 serves as the official Registry of Marriages for the territory.
The construction cost £40,000 in 1819 and replaced an old hospital and chapel of La Santa Misericordia that previously occupied the site.
