Grimsthorpe Castle, English Baroque castle and gardens in Edenham, England
Grimsthorpe Castle is a grand estate with a stone baroque north facade featuring pavilions, set within a large park containing lakes and woodlands. The building houses state rooms that are open to visitors as a museum today.
The original fortress was built in the 13th century as a stone stronghold but received baroque additions over the following centuries. Its present appearance reflects different building phases from medieval times through to the early modern period.
The house displays art and furniture from different periods that show how aristocratic families lived over time. Visitors see how rooms were arranged and what objects the family collected across the centuries.
The estate is open during the warmer months and offers guided tours through the interior rooms and gardens. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes, as there is much to explore on foot and the grounds include some slopes.
A surviving tower from the medieval period can still be identified within the building today, showing its long construction history. This ancient tower was cleverly integrated into the later baroque renovations of the 17th century.
