Loseley Park, Historic manor house in Artington, England.
Loseley Park is a Tudor manor house in Artington, England, built from local green sandstone and featuring a grand hall with carved wooden paneling, royal portraits, and detailed architectural elements from the 16th century. The estate extends across maintained gardens and a walled courtyard, with a 17th-century barn now used for events.
Sir William More built the house in 1568 at the request of Queen Elizabeth I to create a larger residence near London. He used stone and materials from the ruined Waverley Abbey, one of the first Cistercian abbeys in England, which had been abandoned after the Dissolution of the Monasteries.
The great hall displays wooden paneling salvaged from Henry VIII's demolished Nonsuch Palace, pieces that Queen Elizabeth I herself may have seen. The carved works come from master craftsman Grinling Gibbons, whose wood carvings rank among the finest in English history.
The gardens and historic rooms open to visitors on selected days during the summer months, with guided tours through the house and great hall. The 17th-century barn hosts weddings and private functions, while the gardens offer walking paths through maintained grounds.
The drawing room displays a gilded ceiling originally created for King James I and later moved here. The chalk fireplace in the same room was designed by Hans Holbein, the German court painter to Henry VIII known for his royal family portraits.
