Kilchurn Castle, Medieval castle ruin near Loch Awe, Scotland.
The castle stands on a rocky peninsula at the northeastern end of Loch Awe, featuring a five-story tower house with circular corner turrets.
Sir Colin Campbell constructed this stronghold in 1450 as the power base for the Campbells of Glenorchy, who controlled central Highland territories.
The structure appears in numerous paintings by J.M.W. Turner, who captured the castle's silhouette against the Scottish mountain landscape.
Visitors can access the castle ruins from April through September, reaching the site via a path that connects to the former island.
A lightning strike in 1760 accelerated the castle's deterioration, leading to the removal of its roof and eventual abandonment.
