Castle Campbell, Medieval fortress in Dollar Glen, Scotland
Castle Campbell stands on a narrow ridge between two ravines, featuring a four-story tower house with defensive walls and a courtyard measuring 80 feet by 60 feet.
The Campbell clan acquired this strategic stronghold in 1465, renaming it from Castle Gloom to Castle Campbell to establish their presence near Stirling's royal court.
The castle received notable visitors including the Protestant reformer John Knox, who conducted religious services in the great hall during the Scottish Reformation period.
The castle opens daily from April through September between 10:00 and 16:30, with entrance fees of £7.50 for adults and £4.50 for children under 15 years.
The fortress includes an Italian-style loggia, an uncommon architectural element for Scottish castles of the medieval period, indicating continental influences in its design.
