Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Royal medical institution in Old Town, Edinburgh, Scotland
The Royal College of Surgeons spans multiple buildings on Nicolson Street, featuring a grand neoclassical entrance designed by William Henry Playfair in 1832.
Established in 1505 through a royal charter from King James IV, the institution began as a guild of barber-surgeons to regulate surgical practices in Edinburgh.
The Surgeons' Hall Museums contain extensive collections of surgical instruments, anatomical specimens, and medical artifacts that document the evolution of medical science.
Visitors can explore the museums daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with adult tickets priced at £9.50 and concessions available for students and seniors.
The pathology museum houses over 3,000 preserved specimens, including the pocket book of William Burke, which is bound in his own skin.
