Nene Valley Railway, Heritage railway in Castor, England
The Nene Valley Railway is a heritage line in Castor running 7.5 miles (12 km) along the River Nene from Peterborough through Wansford to Yarwell Junction. Steam locomotives operate regular services on the route, carrying passengers through the rural landscape of eastern England.
The London and Birmingham Railway built this line in 1847, creating Peterborough's first rail connection to other cities. Passenger services ended in the 1960s before enthusiasts restored the route as a heritage operation.
The line preserves both British and continental locomotives in its collection, reflecting the broader railway heritage of the region. Visitors see different steam engines in action on operating days and can try driving a locomotive during special events.
Wansford Station offers free parking, a cafe, a gift shop and toilet facilities for visitors to the railway. Trains run on selected days throughout the year between Peterborough Nene Valley and Yarwell Junction, so check the timetable before visiting.
The route served as a filming location for the James Bond films Octopussy and GoldenEye, along with over 150 other film and television productions. The stations and trains also appeared in British series such as London's Burning and EastEnders.
