Canterbury Castle, Norman castle in Canterbury, England
The stone keep of Canterbury Castle rises 20 meters high with walls measuring between 25 and 30 meters at the base, constructed from stone and rubble.
William the Conqueror ordered the construction of a wooden castle in 1066 to secure the Roman road between Dover and London after its capture.
The castle reflects medieval engineering with its defensive architecture, representing the Norman influence on English fortification design during the Middle Ages.
Visitors can access the ground floor of the keep without charge and explore the surrounding Dane John Gardens until sunset each day.
The castle mound in Dane John Gardens may incorporate a Roman burial tumulus, indicating continuous occupation of the site since ancient times.
