Lloyd's Coffee House, Maritime commerce site in City of London, England.
Lloyd's Coffee House was a meeting point for traders and insurers on Lombard Street in the financial district of London. Ship captains, owners and merchants gathered here to share news about arriving vessels and negotiate deals over cargoes from overseas.
Edward Lloyd opened the coffee house in 1687 on Tower Street and moved it four years later to Lombard Street. The establishment remained in operation until 1785 and became the birthplace of the modern insurance market Lloyd's of London.
The coffee house transformed from a simple meeting spot into the foundation of London's maritime insurance market through regular gatherings of merchants and underwriters.
A commemorative plaque on a building in Lombard Street marks where the coffee house once stood. The street lies in the heart of the City of London and is now surrounded by modern banks and offices.
The coffee house published its own newspaper with shipping schedules and cargo lists that traders used for their business. This publication helped information flow more quickly between merchants and insurers.
