Penrhyn Castle, Medieval castle in Llandygai, Wales

The Norman Revival stone castle incorporates an elevated fortified tower and presents intricate stonework with decorated rooms containing art collections and historical artifacts.

The present structure, designed by Thomas Hopper, replaced a medieval fortress in 1820 through funds generated from Jamaican sugar plantations and Welsh slate quarries.

The castle exhibits paintings depicting African slaves working on Jamaican sugar plantations, commissioned by Baron Richard Pennant in the nineteenth century.

National Trust manages guided tours through state rooms, gardens, and a railway museum featuring industrial locomotives previously used in Penrhyn quarry.

The castle tower features an Italian inscription 'essere amato amando' connected to a romance between Baron's daughter and an Italian gardener.

Visit Wales: medieval castles, national parks, and coasts

Wales features a region with three national parks, including Brecon Beacons and the Pembrokeshire coast park, as well as fortresses like Conwy and Caernarfon castles built by Edward I in the 13th century, and religious buildings such as St. David's Cathedral. The coastline alternates between red sandstone cliffs, sandy beaches, and islands like Anglesey, while the inland reveals mountains, lakes, and valleys such as the Elan Valley with its historic dams. Welsh towns preserve their architectural heritage, with Cardiff as the capital. The Gower Peninsula offers limestone cliffs and sea caves, Tintern Abbey has been a Cistercian monastery since 1131, and Powis Castle features terraced gardens. Former mining regions and botanical sites reflect the country's industrial and cultural evolution.
