Countess Pillar, Monument in Brougham, England
The Countess Pillar stands 4.3 meters high as an octagonal stone structure with a blue cube featuring sundials and a heraldic shield at its top.
Lady Anne Clifford constructed this monument in 1656 to mark her final meeting location with her mother Margaret, which occurred forty years earlier.
The pillar represents a tradition of charitable giving, as money was distributed annually to local poor people from an adjacent stone on the anniversary date.
Visitors can access the monument by following a dirt path from the designated parking area on B6262 road, located 400 meters west of A66.
Each face of the octagonal structure contains different decorative elements, including sundials that still function as time-telling instruments in suitable weather conditions.
